Work you wayn up through the city to become mayor (basically) when you can manage the city more directly. Then you purchase land on the cities to produce your own goods. Eventually you buy more ships and hire captains to automate your routes. Sail around, buy low, sell high, take advantage of environmental shortages (famines) avoid pirates. Each of the 30 cities trades in 20 or so goods, each of them producing and consuming different amounts. You start out as a merchant in a 14th centurey city with a single ship. Someone mentions the fourth game, I haven't played it, but Ive heard 3 was better. There's also ship combat, boarding parties, bunches of assorted upgrades to buy, and a main plot revolving around Dune-esque political happenings. There's a few other roles in the game - explorer, spy, scavenger - but they seem to be less a part of the main ecosystem to me. there's a great potential for "dirty cop" roles, where you seize contraband to sell it yourself. Of course, in the process they get whatever's in those holds, which often means illegal goods. but then the goods you steal will usually be illegal, so you have to be a halfway decent smuggler yourself to sell them.īounty hunters need really good faction reputation to get permits at all, then get paid for taking on smugglers and pirates of opposing factions. As a pirate, you might choose to go after smugglers instead, who don't have the same "legal" protections. As a merchant, pirates aligned with the same faction you are will generally let you pass unmolested. Pirates actually have to play smart, because they're secretly merchants - they can attack people and steal stuff all day long, but they have to sell that stuff, so they have to keep friendly relations with at least one faction. That plus the fact that getting scanned with illegal goods makes them less about pleasing everyone - they're more likely to have a small number of specialized haunts, and make longer, higher-profit trips to reach their known markets. Black markets require a good contact reputation (but not so much faction reputation), so playing smuggler involves a lot of finding the right people and greasing palms. Independent worlds are easy and allow all goods, but are rare and usually less developed, so getting a good price might be tough. Smugglers are a lot like merchants, except they skip the "Trade permit" thing by either going to independent worlds or finding black markets. You kind of want a good reputation everywhere, as much as you can manage, because more open ports = better, shorter, more flexible routes from seller to buyer. Factions that don't like you won't let you trade, so you end up figuring out your own routes and managing inventory - deciding between filling your hold with something rare you won't be able to sell for a while vs. Legitimate traders pick paths to sell goods, but the most profitable goods require you to interact with contacts - either to buy permits to sell more lucrative goods, or to buy ultra-profitable rare goods that you often can't sell anywhere nearby. Quests will usually improve your reputation with that faction/contact, but harm it with some other group - it's very hard not to make some enemies, which kind of shapes the map in terms of where you can operate. You have a reputation with each major faction, but also with each contact. Trying to sum up:Ĭontacts belong to factions, and offer quests/provide services. There's a lot about it I don't love, but what it does amazingly well is the interactions between factions, contacts, merchants, smugglers, bounty hunters and pirates. r/lowendgaming - Game suggestions for yesterday's hardware This includes key resellersįor more information about these rules click here This includes referral links.ĭon't enable, encourage, or link to piracy.
